We Are All Responsible!
On 24th July, 2021 I was invited as a speaker among other speakers to share views about Gender equality and how we can all act as responsible citizens to promote Equality in our societies.
Since the emergence of COVID-19, its impact has been felt far and Wide. The pandemic has deepened pre-existing inequalities, exposing vulnerabilities in Social, Political and Economic systems which are in turn amplifying the impacts of the Pandemic. Amidst the crisis, there is hope as norms and behavioral change is taking place in response to challenges posed by the pandemic.
l based on MenCare Campaigns as a way to show women that they are not alone. One concrete action for government particularly for male leaders is to join the campaign for HeForShe.
As seen in Nigeria, UN Women's HeForShe AtHome Campaign was highlighted as an example of how this change in interaction has been positive for men and acted as a role model behaviour to inspire men to take up care work in the household especially during the pandemic.
Since Men are the most dominant population in society, there support can bring a tremendous impact on promotion of Gender equality. Policy makers should pay attention to what is happening in people's homes and support an equal sharing of the burden of care between women and men especially in situations such as the lockdown.
Leaders need to include women in response recovery decision making, whether at the local, Municipal or National level. Bringing the voices of women into decision will lead to better outcomes forexample the Ebola response benefited from the involvement of women's groups. An example is Our President who has involved more women in his cabinet increasing the Gender political rate to 45%.
l advocate for HeForShe Campaigns in schools and on social media platforms, Opening WhatsApp Groups and Blogs Sensitizing people about Gender equality, having people subscribe to Email news letters so that they can be aware about development issues on Gender equality.
In Conclusion: Out of 1.2 billion people in Africa, we have over 600 million youths in Africa. In Uganda, over 75% of the population are Young people who are the future leaders of tomorrow. So when we empower these young people about the benefits of Gender equality, it will have a tremendous impact in the next decades to come.
Among other speakers, it was an honor to participate in such a wonderful session sharing views on how to promote Gender equality in our Societies!
